How Did Birthday Celebrations Start?
The first birthday celebration was actually held in Europe. It was meant to drive away the evil spirits during the ancient times. They believed that these evil spirits will visit the celebrant on his birthday. In order to protect him, his family and friends will gather around and wish the celebrant cute birthday wishes and bring him gifts.
According to the bible, particularly in the book of genesis chapter 40 verse 20, the Egyptians’ earliest recording of birthday celebration was when they celebrated the birthday of the pharaoh. It became a big feast, however, it was not known if this celebration was only meant for the rich or for the general public.
On the other hand, the Greeks are not keen in celebrating birthdays because they treated a person’s birthday as well as the day of his death as dirty day. However, the tradition of birthday cakes and candles actually originated during the Greek times. Round cakes are being offered to the goddess Artemisia as a manifestation of the moon. Candles are lighted in order to brighten it up.
During the Roman times, they celebrated three kinds of birthdays. The first is a private celebration of the celebrant together with his family and friends. There were feast and gift giving. They also have a public celebration wherein they celebrated the anniversaries of their temples and cities. They also celebrated the birthdays of their emperors and their emperors’ families.
During the early days, Christians were forbidden to celebrate birthdays due to the fact that it was considered as a sin and a pagan custom. Most likely because the pagan Romans celebrated birthdays extremely with grand feasts. Later on, this belief was changed and ordinary people celebrated their name days while the upper class celebrated their birthdays.
Nowadays, birthdays are being celebrated all over the world, however, there are some religious organizations that refuse to celebrate birthdays because of historical associations such as Paganism, magic and other superstition beliefs. Also, some orthodox nations and Roman Catholic people celebrate their name days rather than their birthdays.
